similar music (Windfield 240). Many musicians were involved, from Louis Armstrong to Duke Ellington. The jazz movement influenced the history of the United States and the future music industry in various ways. Initially, the first jazz is said to have been played by funeral bands wailing music full of soul and sadness as horse-drawn hearses followed along the streets of New Orleans. It was blues music though (Winfield 157). Many historians mark the beginning of the “Jazz Age” as November 12, 1917, the day the Department of the Navy closed down a thirty-eight-block neighborhood known as Storyville in the city of New Orleans. Fearing for the health of its sailors, the Navy closed the doors of Storyville's brothels and nightclubs, forcing hundreds of New Orleans musicians to seek a livelihood elsewhere (Friedwald 157). After Storyville closed, jazz musicians began moving north to take up permanent residence: several dozen of them landed in Chicago's single major migration destination (Shipton 132). From Chicago, jazz quickly migrated to New York City. That's where jazz became popular on the radio (Shipton 137). Jazz grew up in a variety of places as diverse as America itself: taverns, dance halls, gambling clubs, and hotels. Musicians in small clubs with their small audiences were where their music flourished (Shipton 143). Many jazz musicians spent most of their adult lives in clubs, drank there, ate there, avoided the draft, and achieved their goals (Shipton 144). In addition to how jazz began, there were many musicians involved in the movement. One of the most impactful players was Louis Armstrong. Louis had almost no family and grew up in the black red light district of New Orleans (Friedwald 342). From… middle of paper… as in places like Britain, Germany and France. This was helped by the fact that it was played on the radio. Jazz introduced other things such as the birth of Bebop, Free Jazz and Smooth Jazz (Shipton 850). In conclusion, November 12, 1917 was an important day as it marked the beginning of the Jazz Age when the Navy closed down a neighborhood called Storyville in New Orleans. Every musician involved contributed to shaping the music of Jazz. African Americans were able to express their feelings and earn some money to play in bands. People in the music industry now use some type of jazz music and don't even know it (Winfield 427). If it wasn't for the jazz movement we probably wouldn't be able to enjoy the music that's out there now. Many call jazz America's most original musical art form, but the great trumpeter Louis Armstrong would say its form is simply unknown. (Szwed 457).
