I am not sure about the traditional definition of family which has been suggested as quite a modern invention. Family had, historically, a much broader meaning that I still follow in my own way. To me, family is your entire affinity, not just your parents, siblings and children. It includes aunts and uncles and the multitude of cousins that many people have. For me there is no half or second and third, they are just family. But family is more than just those related to you by blood, it can also include those related to you in affection and demeanor. There are those I consider family, and always will, who have no legal or blood relationship to me. I suppose the definition of family changes to reflect the times we live in, but for me it has remained constant over the years. It designates those we care about. To me, family denotes much more than a relative by blood or marriage. It points to people who accept you, no matter who you are, where there is no loathing or judgment.
