IntroductionIf you're like me, you don't feel comfortable getting "comfortable" with the teacher. I've had teachers before who tried to get friendly with me and it always led to an uncomfortable situation; Do I ignore their attempts or embrace them in hopes of getting a better grade? What if I was the one trying to start a closer relationship? Would this somehow put me in a more favorable situation? In my dilemma, I turned to research to resolve this quagmire. This article will be a study dealing with Judee Burgoon's theory of expectancy violations. I plan to use this theory to analyze how teachers feel when students violate the expectations they have for them. I want to specifically look for contact and compliments between student and teacher, especially if initiated by the student. Regardless of whether a positive match exists or not, this study will help students know what is expected of them from the teacher's perspective, which could help students in their academic pursuits. As a student who is uncomfortable with any kind of physical relationship or friendship between student and teacher, I want to see if my personal preference is shown by others. Literature Review of Expectancy Violations Theory From Em Griffin's book, A First Look At Communication Theory (2012), four specific concepts will be used to aid in this study. I chose to use expectation, reciprocity, adaptation to interaction and violation valence. Expectancy is simply expected behavior and not desired behavior. Reciprocity is defined by Griffin as “a strong human tendency to respond to the action of another with similar behavior.” Reciprocity occurs when someone violates another's expectations. When… middle of the paper… more teachers expect touch to be part of the student-teacher relationship. From research into giving compliments, only half of teachers saw this as a negative experience and furthermore, more than half of teachers said they couldn't be sure if it would change the way they grade an assignment. Therefore, it can be inferred that giving an unexpected compliment to a teacher could lead to a high score on the next assignment or exam. With this study, students will know better what is expected of them from the teacher's point of view. This could help students understand what is appropriate behavior when communicating with their teachers. As a student who is uncomfortable with any type of physical relationship or friendship between student and teacher, it was interesting to see my personal preference being shown by teachers.
