Orwell goes out and tries to find this elephant and in the process he comes across a dead boy and asks for his rifle for protection and that's when things start to get interesting. When people see him with the rifle they start to exist because they think he will shoot the elephant and everyone wants to see him so as he continues to find the elephant more people follow him. Eventually he finds the elephant in a field and wants to leave it alone but there is a crowd behind him who wants him to shoot it. He thinks about it for a while and then gets down on the ground to better shoot the elephant. “When I pulled the trigger I didn't hear the bang or feel the kick… but I heard the unholy roar of joy rising from the song.” If he didn't have the crowd, I bet he would have left it
