According to the Society for Human Resource Management, "In addition to the federal law limitations imposed by the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, several states have enacted statutes that limit interception and social media monitoring”. (Deschenaux) The legality of the matter therefore falls in favor of those who want to be privately public online, although it varies from state to state. Specifically, for Illinois, the law “prevents employers from requiring employees or applicants to reveal their usernames or passwords connected to social networking sites; also prohibits employers from requiring employees to view their social networking profiles for review (2012).” Knowing this, I feel reassured about my future job prospects, but there are still gaps in other areas of online business that these laws cannot cover due to the dark nature of the Internet
