Effects of Non-Traditional Curriculum on its Students To be successful in today's world, a person should have multifaceted knowledge. Therefore, to develop such knowledge in students, many schools have an educational system composed of non-traditional subjects. According to the people who implement this curriculum, it will produce a person well adapted to the current world. It also helps students succeed not only in the classroom but also in the real world. But the curriculum with non-traditional subjects has several effects. In his passage “An Army of One: Me” Jean Twenge discusses the self-esteem curriculum. Although the authorities carrying out these self-esteem programs promise that they will improve the future of students, they are making the future of students worse. In “An Army of one: Me,” Twenge argues for how schools behave autonomously. esteem programs and what kind of effect these programs have on children. Twenge states, “Many school districts across the country have specific programs designed to increase children's self-esteem, most of which actually develop self-importance and narcissism” (765). In the same sentence, he begins to describe the self-esteem program in schools, under the assumption that it is going in a way that was not expected. If we build a building without using the plan we have already drawn, it will be a crooked building. Likewise, the self-esteem curriculum is planned and designed to increase the self-esteem of school-age children, but when implemented it has produced a result directly opposite to that intended. Twenge defines narcissism this way: “Narcissism is one of the few personality traits that psychologists agree is almost completely negative” (774). So, narcissus... from the center of the card... to the real world. Since the real world is not all sunshine and roses, sometimes we have to face failures. But self-esteem programs try to make students feel that there will be no failures, which is not true. If we cannot see the planet Saturn with the naked eye, it does not mean that Saturn does not exist. Likewise, this doesn't mean that students won't fail anything because they've gone through a system that won't let them down. This self-esteem curriculum also hides students' failure and promotes students to the next level. But at some point it will be difficult for those students to catch up with others. Therefore, this self-esteem curriculum should be revised so as to enhance students' future instead of diminishing it. If we choose and implement the program correctly, the future of the younger generations will undoubtedly be prosperous.
