In the play Othello by William Shakespeare, the character of Othello is portrayed as a fairly good man. To some he might be known as a bad person, but he became of great benefit to the growth of Venice and the state of Cyprus. Othello is a good man even though he committed the murder of his wife because he is a great war general and helped Cyprus in its time of need. Even though Othello killed his wife Desdemona, he did so purely out of misunderstanding and jealousy. Iago made Othello believe that Desdemona was cheating on him with Cassio even though she never did such actions. Iago's tenacity and evil intentions made Othello become jealous of Cassio and break down his emotions towards Desdemona and want to kill her in fierce anger. Othello would not commit such a crime if he knew it was a lie because Othello loves Desdemona and would die for her. Othello was madly in love with Desdemona and they were compassionate towards each other, but he was misled and confused by jealousy and hatred which led him off course towards his sinister destiny. Othello cannot be excused as a bad person because of one incident, especially after all the great things he has done and achieved for the city-states. Iago is the true antagonist and became the bad man of the play as his roles are to protect the crown that Othello was in and remain loyal to his fellow soldiers but throughout the play he was the complete opposite with characteristics such as being a liar, a faithful to every character in the play. Othello is a good man but he has taken the wrong path. He is well known in Venice despite being dark for his irreplaceable honor. He is kind-hearted towards most people he meets because he believes in friendship. This led him to meet Desdemona and end up marrying her in whom he showed a passionate interest. Othello easily puts his trust in people, which shows that he is a very friendly character, but he gave it to the wrong person, which is Iago. He put his trust in Iago even though Iago's intentions were simply to have him killed or arrested. Othello had honor and accounted for all his stupid mistakes which only some loyal soldiers can stick to. In the story he displayed these characteristics by killing himself after realizing the deadly mistakes he made.
