50,000 volts of electricity in one shot is all it takes to subdue a person in a dangerous situation. Tasers are an extremely effective tool for officers in dangerous situations as long as they are properly trained. For example, to ensure the full effectiveness of Tasers, officers are required to undergo a comprehensive training session teaching them the proper situation to fire this powerful and intimidating weapon. Furthermore, with the increase in mental health cases, any additional use of the force method before using lethal force should be welcomed with open arms. Subsequently, there have been some cases of taser deaths where other health-related complications have usually been the cause. Clearly the negative stigma around tasers is strongly linked to poor training and knowledge of the facts. Taser training has greatly improved and is now a requirement for officers to gain the authority to use them. For example, officers who carry Tasers with them will now have to undergo about 12 hours of training. Lack of training in the past has led to many problems such as overuse, misuse and negative stigma towards tasers; this new requirement should eliminate such problems. Cp24 news reported that: “Police agencies that equip their officers with Tasers must follow guidelines on training, general use of the devices, maintenance, testing, recordkeeping and reporting” (Kitching , 2013). What this shows is that officers aren't simply given a taser and are able to shoot without consequences. It will be traced and it will have to be proven reasonable that an officer removed the taser from the holster. To prove himself reasonable, the officer must write a situation report and must justify when… the middle of paper… should not be blamed for these incidents and the negative stigma surrounding them should not exist. In conclusion, Tasers are an extremely effective tool for officers in dangerous situations as long as they are properly trained. For example, 12-hour Taser training courses have been organized to reduce the number of accidents due to the improper use of Tasers. Additionally, with mental health on the rise, tasers are another tool available to officers before they need to draw their lethal force weapons. Furthermore, citizens are moving too quickly to the negative stigma that Tasers cause death. The deaths are due to other causes such as: health conditions, improper use of the taser or lack of training. Ultimately, there needs to be a more positive light shined on Tasers and how they can be a huge asset not only to police officers, but also to public safety..
