In the film “Saving Private Ryan”, by Steven Spielburg, begins with a World War II veteran who returns to Normandy to visit the burial place of the Allied soldiers who were killed D-day. He is looking for a particular grave and when he finds it he kneels down and starts sobbing. Captain John H. Miller has a flashback to June 6, 1944 on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. Captain Miller and his team of eight World War II soldiers are assigned the seemingly impossible combat mission of locating and returning an American soldier, Private James Francis. Ryan, whose brothers have already been killed in action. He is trapped somewhere behind enemy lines. To save the family name and provide relief to an already grieving mother, Captain Miller is asked to find Private Ryan and bring him home. After the United States captures the beachhead and settles in, Captain Miller and his seven soldiers begin their mission. The dilemma is that Private Ryan, in the 101st flying, missed his drop zone far from the original plan. The command thinks he is in a nearby town teeming with German soldiers. Miller's team travels through cities, forests and enemy-occupied areas in search of Private Ryan. Unfortunately, two of the eight men are killed during the search, lowering morale. The captain suffers mentally from the burden of losing his men. When they finally locate Ryan, he is defending one of the most strategic cities at the start of the war. The city has one of only two bridges over the river that will gather the Allies on the Eastern Front. Private Ryan does not want to leave his men to guard the bridge because he believes it is unfair to leave his fellow soldiers. So Captain Miller and the team decide to make a last stand... middle of paper... Rian thought, though if he had been considered Sgt. Miller made the movie, thought he might as well defend it. It could be argued that the number of men lost during the battle was ten or twenty times greater. In war, our armed forces also defend ethics because it is a founding duty and character is manifested through actions. The morality of our actions is based on whether the action itself is right or wrong, rather than on the consequences of the actions. The film conveys the idea that Americans should lead morally respectable and socially respectable lives to earn the freedom that our soldiers in battle paid for with their lives. So the veteran on the grave at the beginning of the film is Private James Ryan. Speaks at Captain John Miller's grave saying he fervently tried to "earn" rescue from the captain and his men.
