In 2008, SpaceX signed a 1.8 billion contract with NASA, giving them the privilege of being NASA's commercial resupply service. Just this past March, SpaceX completed its third commercial resupply mission, delivering cargo to the International Space Station. The past mission was only the third of 12 missions SpaceX will carry out for NASA. The International Space Station is not yet completed. After the retirement of the Space Shuttle, construction work slowed significantly, but did not stop completely. The Nations involved in the Space Station continue to ensure that the objective of completing this Space Station does not fail. Humanity must complete the International Space Station to establish an operational base in Space, for the future of space exploration that includes stops on a near-Earth asteroid, Mars and even returning to the Moon. The future of space exploration consists of a series of goals. With the retirement of the Space Shuttle concluding the final flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis on July 21, 2011, it was time for NASA to develop a new module and the Space Transportation System (STS).
