According to College Wikipedia Foundations, college athletics has existed since 1923. In recent years, there have been many court cases by players against the NCAA. Colleges make a lot of money from players and their talents. There are pros and cons to paying college athletes. In the United States of America there are many jobs that underpay people, and sometimes people don't even get paid for their hard work. College sports are a big deal because it creates a bond with the fans, the people at the school, and the athletes. The NCAA is a billion dollar industry and makes it seem so difficult to compensate their athletes who have worked so hard. According to Mark Edelman there are 21 reasons why college athletes should be paid, but I won't list them all. The first reason why college athletes are typical Division I athletes dedicates approximately 45 hours per week to their sport. 45 hours per week is more hours than some normal full-time American jobs. I believe that working that hard per week for that amount of time deserves some sort of reward for it, and most likely, money would satisfy everyone. Working 45 hours a week requires a lot of dedication on top of classes and can sometimes be exhausting. The second reason college athletes should be paid is that colleges make millions from athletic revenue. Of course, players receive items during the season such as travel suits, playing equipment every week and headphones at some schools. These things are good, but they are not enough to take care of other things, like the family that needs them. For example, the University of Alabama had 2013 athletic revenue of $143.3 million. That's a lot of money to carry on a... paper medium... tied to Wall Street. No, college athletes should not be paid to play because some of them unfortunately may use the money for illegal purposes such as drugs and gambling. God wants us to be patient and not fall into the ways of the devil. It's an old saying that “money is the root of evil” and I believe that's a true statement. People in today's society are willing to do anything for money. Money will make you do things you thought you would never do. I believe the university should remain as it is. Stop and think about the athletes who have been kicked out of school for doing illegal things with little money. You have to look at the big picture and say okay, now this is where you draw the line because universities wouldn't be able to keep up with everything that's going on. I believe this discussion about whether college athletes pay to play will go on for years and years to come.
