Topic > The Importance of Antibiotics - 1669

Despite the growing evidence scientists are gathering to support their position that past and present organisms are connected through the mechanisms of evolution, one simply has to look around to see the process in action. In recent years, advances made by scientists in the theory of evolution have revealed discoveries that benefit us, but may also harm us. Beneficial discoveries give us greater knowledge of our origins of life, but some lead to a truth that can lead to death and destruction because organisms that threaten our health receive evolutionary advantages. This threat takes shape in antibiotic resistance in infectious diseases. In just the last few decades, antibiotics have been hailed as the end to all suffering; a drug capable of combating any ailment that afflicted an individual. However, in recent years, scientists around the world have discovered that overuse of this “wonder drug” could lead to the formation of more harmful bacteria. Typically, antibiotics work to eradicate colonies of bacteria that cause infectious diseases in the individual. However, unlike our DNA which contains checkpoints to prevent drastic mutations, bacteria do not have them and produce a wide variety of DNA sets when reproducing. Therefore, when bacteria are attacked by an antibiotic, those immune to the antibiotic survive and continue to reproduce and pass on the resistant DNA to the next generation. Recently, this has been a drastic problem for the medical community because “The hope of addressing this crisis by developing new antibiotics is diminished by both the low rate of discovery of new antibiotics and the likelihood that pathogens will develop resistance to new antibiotics just as they have” . they must resort to existing antibiotics” (Palmer and Kisho...... half of the article ...... reactionism vs. evolution.
