The United States healthcare system should not be universal because the government should not decide the healthcare choices of its citizens. Citizens should be able to choose the doctor and coverage they want at the price they are willing to pay. Universal healthcare would not only degrade the medical industry, it would force people to pay for something they don't necessarily need or want. The current healthcare system is a perfect example of government intervention in a free market. Such a system violates the rights of patients, doctors and business people. Although many people refuse to see it, the foundation of universal healthcare is built on socialist ideas. In an industry where talent and intellect are required, value will no longer be placed on a doctor's expertise or skill. There will be no profit incentive for healthcare workers if they receive the same compensation regardless of the quality of the treatment they administer. The two government-run health insurance programs, Medicare and Medicaid, are a perfect example of this. Medicare determines which doctor the patient sees and what treatments are appropriate. It also determines the duration of treatment and the doctor's compensation. Financially, these programs are bankrupting our government. According to the Standard Objective, “These two federal insurance programs make up nearly 20 percent of the federal budget, and the percentage continues to increase.” (Zinser, “Moral Sanity vs. Universal Sanity”). Doctors are paid much less to treat Medicare patients because of the program's underfunding, and therefore have to turn away many new Medicare patients. This is an example of what public health care would look like if it were proven... middle of paper... based on cost-effective measures. A patient's health treatment should not be decided by the government. The privatization of healthcare will impact those who can afford full coverage and those who can only afford minimal coverage. It will also hit small businesses that won't be forced to provide healthcare to their employees, a huge expense that would save money and allow for the hiring of new staff. Overall, better treatment will be provided if government is removed from the equation. By allowing healthcare companies to compete with each other, the limitations for accommodating patients will be overcome. Providers will work to find new cures and new treatment methods, in order to attract more customers. The private healthcare system will compensate doctors and healthcare workers for their skills and abilities and how better they treat their patients
