The LegendThe Aztec celebration of the Day of the Dead began because of the Aztec belief in how human life originated. According to one version of the legend, humans were made from the bones of previous life. The Aztecs believed that five worlds had been created, four of which had previously been destroyed by killing the human resurrection. After the creation of the third world (the world in which we humans live today) the god Quetzacoatl wanted to re-create human life that had previously been abolished with the destruction of the fourth sun. To once again create human life Quetzacoatl during a passage into the underworld with his guide dog Xolotl. He wanted to retrieve human bones from the ninth circle of the underworld which was guarded by Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec god of death and ruler of Mictal. When he got there, Mictlantecuhtli was reluctant to give him the bones, so he gave him a task to complete first. After completing the task, Quetzacoatl began to collect human bones but Mictlantecuhtli refused to allow him to collect the bones, so he sent people to chase him. ...
