The Roaring '20s were a scandalous time. America was full of cheap alcohol, crazy parties, and people chasing the American dream. These times lead not only to people making grave mistakes, but also to the Great Depression. Big things changed in the 1920s. People no longer behaved or dressed like they used to. It was a time of youthful rebellion. Female youth, in particular, has changed. In the past, women had been arrested or shamed for dressing immodestly or smoking in public. In the 1920s women shortened their hemlines, drank and smoked in public, and flaunted it for all to see. This was obviously due to frustration and a desire to change the way they were treated. The youth of this period are often referred to as the "Flaming Youth". But not only young people behaved badly. The entire population in general was in the grip of a spending frenzy.
