The world today is interconnected and interdependent like never before, primarily due to rapid globalization. The process of globalization began long ago with human migration and trade in goods (Chanda). More recently, the world has gone through three rapid periods of globalization. First, from the industrial revolution in Europe which opened up new resource-filled lands in many other countries, encouraging the flow of people and foreign investment for productions (Salvatore and Dominick, page 2). The second phase of rapid increase in international trade occurred after World War II, when heavy trade protections during the Depression period were dismantled (Salvatore and Dominick, page 3). Currently, globalization is at another peak of development as telecommunications and transportation have accelerated “massive international capital flows resulting from the elimination of most restrictions” across national borders (Salvatore and Dominick, page 4). Globalization represents the diffusion of culture, the circulation of people, goods and services (YaleGlobal). Nowadays, the term globalization is becoming a controversial term with many suggestive synonyms such as: Westernization or Americanization. Negative views accuse globalization of sacrificing social and environmental well-being for corporate economic gains. On the other hand, supporters believe that globalization leads to efficient use of resources and greater selection of products for end consumers. This article will seek to explore the extent of Western economic colonialism in the era of modern globalization. Specifically, the impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on Canada, the United States, and Mexico are compared and analyzed. The entire international community should work together and cooperate to better manage globalization so that it can be used to reduce the exploitation and inequality it has created and to maximize the economic, social and environmental benefits of globalization for all..
