His greatest fear is that he will become like his father: lazy, unable to support his family and a coward. Okonkwo thinks his father's ways are feminine and reacts as he does to avoid resembling his father. This means he works hard, provides for his family, is courageous and masculine in every way. Okonkwo succeeds in many ways. He becomes very rich, holds a high-ranking position in the community, has three wives and is known for his skill as a fighter and warrior. But you will find that, despite all the positive qualities, the fear of being like his father forces him to make some unnecessary and harmful decisions. His fear of being like his father leads him to witness the murder of Ikemefuna - who was like a son, to beat his wives, is emotionally distant from his children and to disown his eldest son.
