Did you know that video games can negatively influence your life? Video games have been around since November 29, 1972 (Jeff Tyson 2000). Video games are fun and entertaining, but they could also have negative effects on people's lives. The least notable are studies by Hope M. Cummings of the University of Michigan and Elizabeth A. Vandewater of the University of Texas, which show that video games can cause people to spend less time doing homework (2007). During the 2002–2003 school year they collected a survey of nearly 1,500 U.S. children and adolescents ages 10 to 19 (Cummings & Vandewater 2007). Approximately 80% of the percentage were boys, and more than 36% of the group reported playing video games (Cummings & Vandewater 2007). Teenage gamers spend 30% less time reading and 34% less time doing homework than non-gamers (Cummings & Vandewater 2007). This is followed by the studies of Dr. Mohamed K. Khan, who state that one of the most common health problems that most people face is obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Erica Loop 2011), more than one-third of the country's children are overweight or obese. Children spend approximately one hour and 13 minutes playing video games (Erica Loop 2011). Addicted gamers often face this problem because they sit in one place and relax for a long time (Roy D'Silva 2012). Many health risks can develop among addicted gamblers (Roy D'Silva 2012). One of the many health risks can be playing video games all night which can develop insomnia. (Roy D'Silva 2012). Another common health problem that addicted gamers face is that people may experience back pain. (Roy D'Silva 2012). When I play video games for a long time I get severe headaches. Most notable are studies by ISU Distinguished Professor of Psychology Craig Anderson showing that violent video games can cause people to engage in violent behavior (2010). Anderson and his team tested the effects of violent video game play on individuals' behaviors, thoughts, and feelings using a meta-analytic procedure (2010). New longitudinal data were included in the research and provided further confirmation that playing violent video games could make some people violent ( Iowa State University 2010 ). Anderson stated that these were not huge effects but not small either (2010). The effects of violent video games are significant in both Eastern and Western cultures in males and females and in all age groups, this was the analysis of Anderson's work (2010).
