Topic > Transactional Leadership and Spiritual Leadership

This section examines and compares transactional, transformational, servant, ethical, and spiritual leadership to identify differences and overlaps in leadership styles. Jamaludin et al. (2011) conducted a study with political practitioners to determine whether transactional, transformational, and spiritual leadership attributes overlapped, and the results demonstrated that the three leadership styles did not overlap and were distinct. The key differences are that transactional leadership is associated with economic stability, transformational leadership is linked to self-actualization, and spiritual leadership extends beyond self-actualization (Jamaludin et al., 2011). Transactional leadership aims at a relational exchange of expected behaviors and performance based on rewards or extrinsic motivation. Transformational leadership inspires followers to excel by creating a confident, respectful, and self-fulfilling work environment. Spiritual leadership motivates followers through intrinsic motivations such as meaning and purpose and by reaching beyond oneself. The difference between transformational and spiritual leadership is that spiritual leadership requires leader and follower to come together, fostering a spiritual survival relationship and consciousness, which results in commitment and higher performance levels, as well as employee satisfaction and well-being (Jamaludin et al., 2011). Money isn't always the answer to motivation problems. Usman and Denmark (2010) communicated that spirituality has been attributed to increased organizational performance. The authors studied the relationship between spirituality and job satisfaction in the Pakistani banking sector.
