Researcher Laura Bogart says the effects of bullying will increase over time and can be harmful to a child's development as they age. Some of the short-term effects on the victim's education are dropping out of school, inability to concentrate, and declining grades. Short-term effects on the victim's health are headache or stomach pain, increased anxiety, sleep problems and low self-esteem. Short-term effects are not the only thing victims have to deal with because bullying is very likely to have long-term effects on the victim's life as well. Some of the major long-term effects on victims' lives are depression, health problems and suicidal thoughts. According to Bullyingstatistics.org, suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in approximately 4,400 deaths per year. For every suicide among young people there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14% of high school students have considered suicide and nearly 7% have attempted it (2). Many victims will never recover from these problems and will suffer lifelong depression and severe suicidal tendencies
