Topic > The war on drugs: does it work? - 2085

Logic is defined as a correct or reasonable way of thinking or understanding something (Merriam-Webster). Many times people find themselves involved in arguments with friends and even colleagues. It happens every day. Without arguments our society would not be so advanced. The legalization of marijuana has been a controversial topic for many years in the United States. Myths about marijuana have become endless, and many people don't realize that almost all of them are false. Over the years, people have been made to believe that marijuana not only affects our bodies but also our minds. When I was in California, my parents and my school told me very seriously that any type of drug was unacceptable for me. I listened to them, they were wise and had been through so many experiences in their lives. Even if people knew that some drugs were illegal, they were still against the law. Why would anyone want to go against the law, parents' suggestions and as well as put their health at risk? As I got older I started doing research on my own and discovered that what I had been told wasn't necessarily true. Marijuana has been valued incorrectly in society and this must change. Many people use marijuana for socialization, relaxation, religious reasons, and medical reasons. Former President Jimmy Carter once said, “Sanctions for drug use should be no more harmful to an individual than the use of the drug itself.” I believe that marijuana should be legalized because possession of marijuana deteriorates law enforcement resources that could be used to fight violent crime at the same time using taxpayers, as well as the United States would feel economically relieved... in between a la carte… a gateway to much more open and liberal drug policies that can certainly benefit the nation as a whole. In short, legalizing marijuana will help law enforcement to focus more on violent crimes, prohibition will not happen and therefore a lot of money will be spent, and medical benefits will help patients with severe pain. This is not to mention that marijuana can have its drawbacks because there is no false claim in this. The reason people fight for legalization is because society has buried itself in the idea that marijuana is a drug that will lead to the destruction of thousands of people. We must move forward and stop judging whether it is a person, ideas and actions and focus on the facts and not speculation. Not legalizing marijuana itself is a much more serious crime than now that it is used without government permission.
