What is schizophrenia? There are many definitions of schizophrenia, NANDA defines this disorder as a "mental disorder characterized by a disruption of thought processes and poor emotional reactivity" (Hafiyudin, 2012). Schizophrenia is a disorder of the mind, in which an abnormality occurs in the reality of daily life (Hafiyudin, 2012). This disease “affects 1 in 100 people in the United States” (Varcarolis & Jordan-Halter, 2010). There are many different types of schizophrenia and different degrees of the disorder. NANDA lists the different types as “catatonic, paranoid, residual, undifferentiated, and disorganized” (Hafiyudin, 2012). There are theories about when schizophrenia originated and how exactly people with this disorder were diagnosed back then. Psychiatrists throughout history have developed their own theories about the effects of schizophrenia on people, the signs and symptoms of the disorder, and its extent.
