In the late 1990s a new corruption began in the Community Resources against Street Hoodlums or also known as the CRASH anti-gang unit within the Rampart Division of the Los Angeles Police Department . Many officers have been tried and convicted for committing illegal gang beatings and shootings. The officers were also convicted of crimes including introducing false evidence, theft, bank robbery, distribution of illegal drugs and perjury. The Rampart scandal has raised much public concern regarding the corruption involved in law enforcement as many cases have never been tried since 2008; this demonstrated a high degree of corruption problems. (“The Rampart Scandal.” WiseGeek.) The Rampart scandal began with Officer Frank Lyga on March 18, 1997 with a road rage incident. Lyga was working an undercover case in a Buick, waiting for a drug deal to happen, but the deal was called off. While walking back to the police station, he stopped at a red light, looked at the car next to him and noticed a black man with a shaved head and a goatee. Lyga, thinking the man was staring at him; he rolled down the window and asked, “Can I help you?” The man replied to Lyga rudely: “No one is watching you, you punk.” The man immediately wanted to fight Lyga and suggested that they both approach each other. Since the man challenged Lyga, she assumed he was associated with a gang. (“Rampart Scandal Explodes.” TruTv.) When the man stopped, Lyga immediately took off and called the police for help. The man chased Lyga until they both raised their weapons. Lyga shot and killed the man. The police investigated and discovered that the man shot by Lyga was Kevin Gaines, an undercover officer from the Rampart Police Bureau CRASH in Los Angeles... middle of paper... and, for example, take a strong consideration of any information or complaint received from the public or any other source that goes against the integrity of officials. (“Recommendations for the prevention of corruption”. ICAC.NSW.GOV) In my opinion, corruption cannot be stopped but it can be reduced with the will of the people, as I said above there could be many recommendations but it all depends on that person who is committed. I think corruption is a choice; we all have a voice and rights and if we choose to do illegal things there is no one to blame but ourselves. However, there is corruption in every field of work out there. Corruption has existed for years and years and will continue to exist in the future, it is something that no one will be able to eradicate. All countries in the world face corruption, even the most powerful developed countries.
