Introduction: Harrison College is a family-owned educational institution located in Indianapolis, with a total of 13 campuses, a culinary school, and an online division. Founded in 1902, Harrison College has grown from a small business school to a four-year college offering degrees from the schools of business, health sciences, computer science, veterinary technology, and criminal justice (Harrison College, 2010). Beginning in 1986, the vision of Harrison College changed to that of an organization dedicated to “family, faith, health and work.” This vision has allowed the school to thrive and achieve a rate of growth unseen in the previous 84 years (Harrison College, 2010). Complementing this vision is Harrison College's Mission Statement (Appendix A) and its Values Statement (Appendix B). For the past three years, Harrison College employees have voted it one of the “Best Places to Work in Indiana” (Indiana Chamber of Commerce, 2010). Beginning in 1999, Harrison College introduced a program, Investment in Excellence, to ensure all employees remained focused on the organization's mission, goals, and strategic objectives (Konesco, 2011). Through this program, management has made strategic planning an inclusive process, with employees at all levels of the organization contributing to the college's strategic planning process. This brings cross-functional information and cooperation to the entire process, as well as an in-depth understanding of the business and trends impacting sustainability and future progress. At the same time, the Executive Committee composed of the president, vice presidents and directors, commissioned an annual macro-environmental survey focused on the property market...... middle of paper....... Social networking has enabled the next generation to collaborate and contribute with their peer group in an unlimited way. When they enter traditional schools or organizations, they are confronted with an established hierarchy based on individual effort, not collaborative outcomes (Tapscott, 2009, p. 154). Individual tests or assignments, rather than group projects, govern the curriculum of most schools and the assessment format of most organizations. You need to refocus your resume and job descriptions to take advantage of the technical skills inherent in today's students. Harrison College is touching on these concepts but, like most schools, must increase its efforts in this area and redirect its teaching staff and curriculum committees to restructure its programs to include this new method of teaching and learning.
