Housing in Los Angeles is insufficient for the population, and current policies have not focused on solving these problems (Varady et al., 2005). Providing temporary housing and short-term jobs to the chronically homeless does not reduce the number of homeless people in the city, it only solves the problem for a while. Taking action in response to the urgency of those who have no shelter for a long time is important, but solving the root problem is what must be done. The U.S. government pays rent to private landlords for the benefit of Section 8 beneficiaries, but most homeowners don't fully support this move. Most of them prefer to rent their house at the market rate. There are other homeless people who have not benefited from this policy because they do not qualify but still have accommodation. Rental trends are cause for alarm and the number of homeless people will increase as more people are unable to afford rent and face eviction. The government continues to subsidize rent through the Section 8 policy, but society should take up the challenge of helping reduce homelessness. Inadequate employment has forced the poor to leave their homes and society is expected to do its social duty towards the homeless in rural areas.
