“Winter” relies more on imagery, contrast is used throughout the poem, it is in the third person and there is no overarching metaphor. Using descriptive adjectives, the author manipulates the audience into seeing a “leafless branch,” a “rayless sun,” and a “sea of frozen foam” (3,6,14). The “cold winds” are felt and the “shrill” singing is heard (2.3). This helps the author move from a cold and violent mood to a warm and peaceful one. The first stanza has a harsh tone, the second is neutral, with the image of a slow sunset, and the third is very warm and serene. Heat is present when fire is used as a metaphor for snow. The poem ends with a peaceful image of the moon floating over a snow-covered field. By using these devices, the author improves the audience's understanding of his opinions
